Dylan's Eagle project

Spring Lake Community House

When I was 14 years old, I applied for and obtained the job of our town library’s page. I have always loved reading and the library. After riding my bike to work, I noticed that there was nowhere to park it. This was a common problem. The library is located in the town's 100 year old Community House, which hosts many events, including theater productions and a large dance troupe. Bikes were always scattered across the lawn in every season. I wanted to solve this problem for my Eagle Project.

Bikes haphazardly parked on grass.

To show my Scoutmaster the problem, I parked my family’s bikes on the grass to illustrate the issue. His reaction was, “I’ve lived in this town for sixty years, and I’ve always hated how people leave their bikes on the grass!”

Along the way, I learned how to deal with unexpected problems on the fly, such as leveling the sidewalk, which wasn’t part of the original plan. I also learned how patios require a solid base layer, how t

Cleaning up

It was a relief when we finished in the late afternoon of the following weekend. After everyone had left, I made sure to clean up the job site and protect our project so that it could properly dry and set.

Finished!

I felt an immense sense of pride when the project was finally completed. The local newspaper even came to cover the story, highlighting the positive impact on our community. Now, whenever I pass by the Community House, I see bikes neatly parked in the racks every day, a visible reminder that our hard work made a lasting difference. In fact, November 13th is now celebrated as Dylan Thomas Day in m

Little Bro

It's a good idea to get your little brother an ice cream if he spent two saturdays helping you out!
